Treat your favorite pups to some paw-some homemade treats this Valentine’s Day.
Here are three recipes with a minimum of ingredients. If you have questions about what your canine can consume, check with your vet first.
Peanut Butter and Banana Canine Cookies
Here’s a tail-wagging good treat from A Virtual Vegan.
- 2 cups of rolled oats or quick oats, or oat flour
- 1/3 cup peanut butter (make sure the peanut butter is made with just peanuts and no salt or other additives)
- 1 medium very ripe banana
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Add oats to a food processor and process until a flour-like consistency, or use oat flour
Add peanut butter and banana
Process or mix until a dough is formed
Roll out dough to about 1/8” thick
Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 20 – 30 minutes. Watch the bottoms so they don’t go too brown.
Leave to cool on the tray then transfer to an air tight container.
If your banana is on the small side you might find that your dough is a little dry. Just add water a drop at a time until the dough forms.

- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup unsalted Almond butter
- 1/3 – 1/2 ripe banana
- 1 Tsp. ground cinnamon
Pre-heat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Use a fork to mash the banana in a bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix together until blended. The batter consistency should be very thick and gooey. Spoon out dime sized dollops onto the parchment paper and place in the oven for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, turn the pan and bake for another 5 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let cool. These should last for approximately 5-7 days.
Best of Breed Dog Biscuits
This recipe is from King Arthur Flour gets a big paws up.
Preheat the oven to 300°F.
Lightly grease two baking pans or line them with parchment paper.
Combine the following in a bowl and stir.
- 2 cups of King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour or Premium Whole Wheat Flour
- 1 cup rolled oats, regular or quick
- 1 Tsp. dried parsley or 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
Add 2 large eggs and 1 cup of peanut butter, crunchy or plain.
Stir to combine; the mixture will be crumbly.
Add 1/2 cup of cold water, or a bit more, to make a cohesive dough.
Roll the dough about 1/4” thick. It won’t be smooth like cookie dough.
Cut with a dog bone shaped cutter. Re-roll the scraps and continue to cut biscuits until you’ve used all the dough.
Lay the biscuits close together on the prepared baking sheets.
Bake for about 40 to 60 minutes, baking smaller cookies for a shorter amount of time, larger biscuits for a longer amount of time.
The biscuits will be dark golden brown, and dry and crisp all the way through.
